A standalone WiFi router usually needs one Ethernet cable for its internet input. That cable runs from a modem, fiber ONT or provider Ethernet wall jack to the router’s WAN or Internet port. Your phones, laptops and streaming devices can still connect to the router wirelessly.
There are exceptions. A modem-router gateway combines both jobs, a cellular router may use a SIM or eSIM, and secondary mesh nodes can often use wireless backhaul. The exact answer depends on which device is acting as the main router.

Why a wireless router still needs a cable
WiFi describes the radio link between the router and nearby devices. It does not describe how internet service enters the home. In a common cable or DSL setup, the modem converts the provider connection into Ethernet. The router then shares that connection over WiFi and its LAN ports.

The cable usually goes into WAN, not LAN
On a traditional router, connect the upstream modem or ONT to the port labeled WAN, Internet or with a globe symbol. The numbered LAN ports are normally for computers, switches and other devices inside the home network.
Some mesh routers use auto-sensing ports, so either socket can become the upstream connection during setup. Follow the model’s current instructions rather than choosing by port color alone. Do not insert a basic Ethernet switch between a simple modem and the primary router unless the provider’s design specifically calls for it.
Your WiFi devices do not need Ethernet cables
Once the main router has internet access, a phone, tablet, laptop, smart speaker or streaming player can join by WiFi. Those devices need the correct network name and password, but they do not need individual cables.
You may still choose Ethernet for a desktop computer, television or game console when a stable wired path is practical. That is a client connection to the router, not the upstream cable that gives the router internet access.
A combined gateway hides the internal connection
Many providers supply one box that contains a modem and router. It may connect directly to coax, a phone line or a fiber terminal and broadcast WiFi from the same enclosure. You will not see a separate Ethernet cable between the modem and router because those functions are combined.
If you add your own router behind that gateway, you normally connect the new router by Ethernet. Check the provider’s compatibility, bridge-mode and support rules in the own-router setup guide before changing the gateway. Two active routers can create double NAT.
Fiber usually ends at an ONT first
Fiber service often reaches an optical network terminal, or ONT. The ONT commonly hands the connection to the main router over Ethernet. Some providers integrate more functions or use provider-specific equipment, so do not disconnect, bend or modify the fiber itself.
An Ethernet wall jack can also be the provider handoff in an apartment or dorm. In that case, the router may connect to the jack without a modem in the room. Confirm that the jack supplies routed or public internet service rather than assuming every wall port is active.
The primary mesh router is different from a mesh node
The primary mesh unit acts as the gateway for the network. Eero’s gateway guidance says the gateway eero connects to the modem with Ethernet. Models without Ethernet ports, such as the Beacon and eero 6 Extender, can extend an existing network but cannot act as its gateway.
Additional mesh nodes can often connect to the main unit wirelessly. Ethernet backhaul is optional on supported models, but a wireless node still depends on the gateway’s working upstream connection. Eero’s Ethernet-port guide says the gateway keeps one port connected to the modem and places a switch after the gateway.
Cellular routers are the main cable-free exception
A 4G or 5G router can receive its internet connection from a cellular network through a SIM, eSIM or provider-integrated module. It may not need Ethernet for the upstream service, although it can still have Ethernet ports for local devices.
Check carrier approval, bands, plan terms, address restrictions and the exact model before buying. A phone hotspot is another wireless upstream option, but it has different data, battery and device-count limits. The hotspot versus home internet guide covers that decision.
Can a router make WiFi without internet?
Many routers can broadcast a WiFi network even when the WAN cable is missing. Local devices may still reach the router or each other, depending on settings. That does not mean the network has internet access.
If a phone says Connected without internet, check the cable from the upstream device to the router, the modem or ONT lights and the provider’s outage status. Restart equipment in the order supplied by the provider. Avoid a factory reset until you have recorded the account, WiFi and connection settings.
What to check before buying a cable or router
- Identify the box that receives the provider line. It may be a modem, ONT, gateway or cellular receiver.
- Find the current main router and its WAN or Internet port.
- Read the provider and router setup instructions for the required cable type and port speed.
- Measure the route without running cable across a doorway, heat source or electrical hazard.
- Buy only after confirming whether the package already includes the needed Ethernet cable.
If the service uses a separate modem or ONT and a standalone router, plan on one compatible Ethernet cable between them. The devices around the home can remain wireless unless a wired connection solves a specific stability or speed problem.
