Slow upload speed is not always a bad WiFi signal. Your plan may have a lower upstream limit than its download speed, a cloud backup may be using the connection, or the problem may start between the device and the router. Compare those possibilities before buying a new router or changing plans.
Start with the right comparison
Run the same speed test on one device in two ways: first over Ethernet near the router, then over WiFi from the usual working location. Pause video calls, cloud sync, camera uploads, and large file transfers during the comparison. Record download speed, upload speed, and latency each time.

Check whether the plan is the limit
Many home plans advertise a much larger download rate than upload rate. That is normal for some cable, fixed-wireless, and mobile services. Read the provider’s broadband label or plan details and compare the listed upload rate with your test results. Do not compare your upload result with the download number and assume the line is broken.
If the provider’s listed upstream rate is already close to what you measure on Ethernet, a faster WiFi router will not create more upstream capacity. Look for traffic using the upload path
Uploads are easy to miss because they can run in the background. Cloud photo libraries, security cameras, file backups, video calls, live streams, and peer-to-peer apps can all send data while the browser appears idle. Pause one service at a time, then repeat the same test. If the result improves only when a particular service stops, schedule that task outside calls or gaming.
On a computer, check the operating system’s network or task monitor for apps sending data. On a phone, review cloud-photo and video-backup settings. A router’s device list can also reveal a camera, console, or computer that is active when nobody is using it.
Separate WiFi from the internet connection
Test beside the main router, then test in the room where the problem occurs. Keep the device and test service the same. A large difference points to the local wireless path, not necessarily the provider.
- Move the device within a few feet of the router and test again.
- If the router uses separate network names, compare 5 GHz near the router with 2.4 GHz from the distant room. Keep the band that gives a steadier upload, not simply the highest download number.
- Remove a thick wall, cabinet, or large appliance from the path when possible.
- Try another device in the same room. If only one device is slow, troubleshoot its adapter, VPN, security software, or sync tools.

When the router or provider deserves attention
Restarting once can clear a temporary state, but repeated reboots do not fix a plan limit or a busy upload queue. Check the router’s firmware and power supply, then repeat the Ethernet test at another time. If every wired device remains far below the plan’s listed upload rate, contact the provider with the times, test method, and results. Ask whether there is a line fault, provisioning issue, outage, or upload cap on your service.
