Run an internet speed test more than once before you decide that your plan is too slow. Start with a wired test near the router if possible, then compare WiFi near the router with the room where the problem occurs. Use the same device, server, and time window when you compare results. This shows whether the limit is the broadband line, your WiFi path, or the device.
Write down what you are paying for
Before testing, find the plan’s advertised download and upload speeds, data rules, and any typical-speed information. The number on the bill is the baseline for the service, but a WiFi result in a distant bedroom is not a direct test of the line. Keep the plan name and test date beside every result.
Pause heavy traffic
Stop a large download, cloud backup, game update, or video upload for the baseline test. Ask other household members to pause streaming for a minute if practical. You can run a second test while the home is busy, but label it as a shared-load result. Do not compare a quiet morning result with a crowded evening result and call the difference a router failure.
Test the wired connection first
Connect a laptop to a LAN port on the router with Ethernet. Turn off the laptop’s WiFi so it cannot switch paths during the test. Run two or three tests and note download, upload, latency, and the time. If the wired result is close to the plan but WiFi is much lower, investigate placement, band, interference, or the device before upgrading the internet plan.
Use the same device for WiFi comparisons
Disconnect the cable and stand a few feet from the router. Run the same test, then repeat it in the room where streaming or calls fail. Keep the device orientation and test site the same. A phone, laptop, and TV may have different WiFi radios, so do not treat their single results as a controlled comparison.
Repeat at the time the problem occurs
If the internet feels slow every evening, test at that time on several days. Record the results instead of relying on memory. A wired result that falls for every device at the same time points toward the modem, provider, or neighborhood load. A stable wired result with a weak bedroom WiFi result points back to the local wireless path.

Use a second test when results look strange
