Yes. You can give a new router the same WiFi name and password as the old router. Many phones, laptops and smart devices will recognize the saved network and reconnect. Match the name exactly, including capitalization, use the same password, choose a compatible security mode, and turn off the old router’s WiFi before the new network takes over.
What has to match
The WiFi name is also called the SSID. A device normally saves the SSID together with its password and security type. Copying only the visible name may not be enough if the new router uses a security setting that an older device cannot join.

Google’s Nest Wifi instructions say that reusing an older network name and password can save you from reconnecting devices that used that network before. TP-Link gives similar guidance for Tapo and Kasa devices, but it also tells users to match the encryption type.
Why some devices still stay offline
Automatic reconnection is useful, but it is not a promise for every device. A saved phone may join immediately while an older plug, printer or camera stays offline. That device may not support the new security mode, may need a 2.4 GHz setup path, or may keep an old connection state until it restarts.
Apple recommends WPA3 Personal where supported, or WPA2/WPA3 Transitional for compatibility with older equipment. Do not fall back to WEP, TKIP or an open network just to keep one old device online. Check that device’s support page for its approved security and reconnection steps.
Do not run two unrelated networks with the same name
Finish configuring the new router, then turn off WiFi on the old router or gateway before moving devices over. If both unrelated routers keep broadcasting the same name, a phone or smart device may attach to the wrong one. Local features such as printing or casting can fail when household devices end up on separate networks.
This warning is different from a coordinated mesh system, where the nodes are designed to present one managed network. If an ISP gateway must remain for the internet connection, follow the provider’s instructions for bridge, passthrough or WiFi-off mode instead of guessing.
A low-risk way to replace the router
- Photograph or write down the old SSID, WiFi password and security mode.
- Save any provider connection details and router settings you know you need.
- Set up the new router with a temporary name while it receives firmware updates and proves that the internet works.
- Turn off the old router’s WiFi or power it down if it is no longer needed for the upstream connection.
- Change the new router to the exact old SSID and password, then select the appropriate secure mode.
- Restart the new WiFi if its instructions require it and test a phone, laptop and one smart device.
- Open the router’s device list and check anything important that remains offline.
Using a temporary name during setup keeps the two routers easy to tell apart. It also lets you confirm the new internet connection before dozens of saved devices start joining. Keep the replaced standalone router unplugged but available until the main household devices have passed a normal-use test. Leave a combined modem-router powered if its modem is still providing the connection.
What does not transfer with the WiFi name
Reusing the SSID and password does not copy the old router’s settings. Guest networks, parental controls, address reservations, port forwarding, DNS choices, VPN settings and device names must be recreated if you still need them. The new router may also assign different local addresses.
A smart-home app can show a device as offline even after the device joins WiFi if its account, hub or local-address setup also changed. Check the device in the router list first, then follow the maker’s own reconnect or reset instructions. Avoid factory-resetting every smart device before you know which ones actually failed.
Should all bands use one WiFi name?
Apple recommends one unique, case-sensitive network name across all bands on the same managed network. That lets compatible devices choose among the router’s available bands. Some smart-device setup procedures still ask for a 2.4 GHz connection, so follow the device and router instructions if onboarding fails.
Do not assume that adding “2.4” to the name fixes a radio compatibility problem. It creates a different saved network. A temporary band-specific setup option can be useful when the router maker supports it, but the normal setting should follow the documentation for the router and devices you own.
If a device will not reconnect
- Restart that device and wait for it to scan again.
- Check that the SSID and password match exactly.
- Confirm that the selected security mode is supported.
- Make sure the device is within range and that its required band is enabled.
- Forget the saved network on a phone or computer, then join it again.
- Use the device maker’s reconnection flow before trying a factory reset.
