Closing a door can weaken WiFi when the door sits between the router or mesh node and your device. The effect depends on the door material, frame, distance, nearby walls, and the signal that reached the room before the door closed. Test the same device in the same spot with the door open and closed before buying new equipment.
The door may be the last obstacle, not the only one

A thin interior door may make little practical difference in one home. A solid door, metal surface, mirrored panel, or several barriers in the same path can matter more. There is no reliable universal speed loss or minimum distance because home layouts and WiFi equipment vary.
Run an open-door and closed-door test
- Use the phone, laptop, TV, or camera that has the problem.
- Keep it in its normal position and turn off mobile data on a phone.
- Run the task that exposes the issue, such as a video call or stream, with the door open.
- Close the door without moving the device, router, or mesh node.
- Repeat the same task and note signal stability, buffering, or dropouts.
- Open the door and repeat once more to see whether the change follows the door.
One speed test can rise or fall because of server load or other traffic. A repeatable change in the same real task is more useful. If possible, test a second device in the same place so one weak client does not define the whole room.
Move the signal path, not the door
Linksys advises keeping a router in an open location because thick wood, fabric, metal, and other bulky material can absorb or reflect wireless signals. TP-Link also identifies walls and metal as common physical obstacles. A small sideways move can be more useful than moving the router farther away to reach a geometric center.
- Place the router or node on an open, stable shelf instead of behind furniture.
- Keep it out of the direct line of a metal door or mirrored closet panel.
- Move a desk or television a short distance sideways when the router cannot move.
- Keep router vents clear and do not wedge equipment into the door frame.
- Never hold a fire door open or run a cable where the door can crush it.
Check the mesh node’s path back to the router
A device can show a strong connection to a nearby mesh node even when that node has a poor wireless link back to the main router. Move the node toward the doorway or to the router side of the obstacle, then repeat the closed-door test. Do not place the node deep inside the dead zone.
If the node works only with the door open, Ethernet backhaul or a wired access point can avoid that wireless path. Compare mesh WiFi with a WiFi extender only after the placement test shows where coverage fails.
Try 2.4 GHz, but do not expect a guarantee
When your router offers separate bands, 2.4 GHz may remain usable farther from the router or through more obstacles than a higher-frequency band. It can also be busier and slower. Test the bands with the door closed rather than assuming one is always best.
Some routers use one WiFi name and choose the band automatically. In that case, leave the normal band-steering setup in place unless the manufacturer provides a supported way to run a temporary comparison.
Know when the door is not the problem
Test beside the router with the door out of the path. If WiFi is poor there too, check the router, device, channel environment, firmware, and incoming internet service. If Ethernet is also slow, the door cannot explain it. Use the router replacement and placement checklist before spending money.
A repeatable open-versus-closed difference means the room needs a clearer wireless path or a wired connection. No measurable difference means you can leave the door alone and investigate the next cause.
