You can normally plug a home WiFi router and modem into a sound, correctly rated indoor power strip. Use the approved power adapter for each device, keep the strip dry and uncovered, and stay within its electrical rating. Do not use a cracked, hot or loose strip, and do not plug one power strip into another.
A power strip and surge protector are not the same
A basic power strip adds outlets. A surge protector looks similar but also contains components intended to limit a voltage surge. UL Solutions advises checking the product marking and electrical rating rather than assuming every strip provides surge protection.

The router’s small power draw does not make any strip safe. The condition, rating, certification, outlet and other connected loads still matter.
Use the adapter made for the router
The power strip supplies household AC power. The router’s adapter converts that power to the voltage and polarity the router expects. NETGEAR recommends using the adapter included with its product because a wrong replacement can damage the device or make it unsafe.
Do not choose a replacement only because the plug fits. Match the exact model and the maker’s input, output, polarity and approval requirements. Keep the modem, router and mesh-node adapters labeled so they do not get mixed after a move.
Check the power strip before using it
- Look for certification from a recognized independent testing laboratory and a named manufacturer.
- Read the voltage, current or watt rating on the strip.
- Inspect the plug, cord, case, switch and sockets for damage or looseness.
- Insert every plug fully so no metal prong remains exposed.
- Keep the strip and adapters on a dry, open surface where heat can escape.
- Route the cord where it will not be pinched, tripped over or pulled by pets and furniture.
CPSC says to stop using a cord that feels hot and to replace cracked or worn products. It also warns against covering cords with rugs because trapped heat can create a fire risk.
Do not overload or daisy-chain the strip
Add the listed maximum input for everything connected to the strip and stay within the strip’s rating. A router and modem are usually modest loads, but a nearby heater, hair dryer, toaster, air conditioner or other high-power appliance changes the calculation. UL notes that heating products can overload a strip much more easily.
Do not plug a second strip or extension cord into the first strip. If one wall outlet cannot safely serve the equipment, have a qualified electrician assess the outlet and home wiring. A chain of adapters is not a permanent wiring upgrade.
Can the modem and router share one strip?
They can share one properly rated strip when the total load remains within its limit and each device uses its own approved adapter. This can also make an orderly shutdown easier. Do not stack the adapters where they trap heat or force a heavy adapter to hang from a loose socket.

Should you use a surge protector?
A certified surge protector can add protection against specified surges on the electrical path. It is different from a plain strip, and its protection rating and status indicator matter. Follow its manual and replacement guidance. No consumer device can promise protection from every surge or lightning event.
Surge protection does not keep the network running when power fails. It also does not prove that a cable, phone or Ethernet path has equivalent protection. If your home has recurring electrical problems, damaged outlets or frequent breaker trips, ask a qualified electrician to inspect the cause.
Use a UPS as its maker directs
A UPS can keep low-power network equipment running for a limited time, but runtime depends on the battery, connected load and battery condition. The provider’s equipment outside your home may still lose power, so backup power cannot guarantee internet service.
Schneider Electric tells APC UPS owners to plug the UPS directly into the wall and not place a separate surge protector, power strip or extension cord on the UPS output. Other brands may have their own rules. Follow the exact UPS manual instead of building a strip-to-UPS chain.
A quick setup check
- Identify every box and its original adapter.
- Check the strip’s certification, rating and physical condition.
- Remove high-power appliances and any chained strip.
- Seat the router and modem plugs fully.
- Keep the strip, cords and adapters open, dry and cool.
- After power-up, confirm that the modem or ONT reaches its provider state before judging WiFi.
If a router restarts when a plug is touched, the socket is loose, the adapter is damaged or the strip becomes hot, stop using that setup. Do not tape a plug into place. Replace the faulty item with an approved product or ask an electrician to inspect the outlet.
To estimate how much the network equipment adds to the household load, use its measured draw or exact model information. Do not treat an adapter’s maximum rating as a measured energy bill.
