Yes, Gemini can use your Gmail content when the relevant connection and permissions are enabled. To stop that access from the Gemini app, disconnect Google Workspace in its connected-app settings. If you also use the assistant inside Gmail, review Gmail’s separate smart-feature controls. Disconnecting an app does not erase earlier chats.
Checked November 4, 2026. This guide covers personal Google Accounts. Work and school accounts can have administrator-controlled settings and different terms; don’t apply personal-account instructions to a company inbox.

Which Gemini access are you trying to stop?
Start by identifying where you see the assistant. The Gemini app and the assistant inside Gmail are different places to use AI, even when you sign in with the same address.
In Gemini Apps, the Google Workspace connection includes Gmail, Calendar and Drive. Google’s Personal Intelligence connection guide explains that supported connections can bring information from those services into personalized responses. Availability depends on account eligibility and rollout.
Inside Gmail, Ask Gemini can help summarize messages, draft replies and find information. Google’s Gemini in Gmail instructions describe that experience and its eligible plans. Closing its panel exits the assistant; that is not the same action as disconnecting Workspace from the Gemini app.
If your concern is a personal detail appearing in a response, consider whether you previously pasted it into a chat. An answer containing an address or travel date doesn’t, on its own, identify which connection supplied it.
Disconnect Gmail access from the Gemini app
Google’s current Connected Apps management guide gives this computer route:
- Open Gemini on the web and check that you have selected the intended Google Account.
- In the sidebar, choose Customize. If it isn’t visible, open More first.
- Select Connectors and find Google Workspace.
- Open its More options menu, choose Disconnect, and follow the confirmation instructions.
Google’s mobile Personal Intelligence guide describes Menu > profile picture > Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps, where you can turn the Workspace connection off. Your layout may differ. Follow the available connected-app controls rather than looking indefinitely for an old “Extensions” label.
Review the scope before disconnecting: Workspace covers more than Gmail. Choose this when you want to stop that connection, not because you merely want to hide an icon. You can still use Gemini for general questions without connecting private Google apps.
Review Gmail’s separate smart-feature settings
In Gmail on a computer, open Settings > See all settings > General > Google Workspace smart features > Manage Workspace smart feature settings. Review the two Workspace controls and click Save after any change. A separate Gmail, Chat and Meet control appears under Smart features.
| Control | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Smart features in Google Workspace | Features across Workspace, including Gemini assistance and Gmail events appearing in Calendar. |
| Smart features in other Google products | Workspace-based personalization elsewhere, including Personal Intelligence in Gemini. |
| Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet | Features within those apps, such as Smart Compose and email categorization. |
Google’s smart-feature settings explanation treats these as independent controls. Turning off the Workspace setting removes its associated experiences; it doesn’t require turning off Gmail’s separate Smart Compose control too. Read the listed effects before changing all three.
Disconnecting does not delete old Gemini chats
Google explains that disconnecting an app can leave information in past chats. Deleting a chat alone also doesn’t prevent a still-connected app from supplying that information again. Review both the connection and the conversations containing the details you want removed. You don’t need to delete the original email just to disconnect Gemini.
Use Gemini > Settings & help > Activity to review saved activity and choose specific items or a time range. If you want to stop future activity being saved through that setting, review Keep Activity. Turning it off and deleting previous activity are separate choices.
Google’s activity-management instructions say conversations can still remain with your account for up to 72 hours when Keep Activity is off, to provide the service and process feedback. So “off” does not mean nothing is retained. Review deletion choices carefully before confirming them.
Does Gemini use connected Gmail content for AI training?
For personal-account Connected Apps, Google’s current personalization and data-use notice makes an important distinction. It says Gemini does not train generative models directly on your Gmail inbox. But with Keep Activity on, relevant summaries, excerpts and inferences used in Gemini interactions can support model training. In some cases, a short, relevant email can itself be the summary.
The notice also describes human review of a subset of connected-app data and steps to reduce personal information. It warns against connecting apps containing confidential information you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see. That is narrower than either “Google trains on every email” or “email content can never be used.” These Connected Apps terms should not be generalized to every Workspace product or account type.
Check the result without exposing more private information
- Reopen the connected-app page under the same Google Account and confirm the Workspace connection is disconnected.
- If you changed Gmail’s smart-feature controls, reopen them and confirm the saved states match your choices.
- Review older chats separately. Don’t treat a detail repeated in an existing conversation as proof that the connection has silently returned.
- Avoid pasting an email or uploading its screenshot to test whether Gemini can read it. That supplies another copy of the information you were trying to withhold.
Use the saved settings as your check, rather than asking the assistant to certify its own permissions. If you use several Google Accounts, repeat the review for each relevant account. Stop if the screen belongs to an employer or school and ask the administrator which controls apply.
Account access is also separate from your phone allowance. Disconnecting Gmail doesn’t make AI chats offline; if your concern is cellular use, see our guide to checking mobile data used by AI chats, voice and uploads.
